Description
"Almost." It's one of the saddest words in the English language. It means "Close, but not close enough." In the eighty years following the War of Independence, up until the time of the Civil War, there was an unprecedented explosion of religious growth in America. The Methodist church alone grew from 50 congregations in 1780 to over 20,000 in 1860. The influence of the Wesleyan evangelists of the Second Awakening was a powerful force, and people were coming to a saving knowledge of Christ by the tens of thousands. America was, for a time, on its way to becoming a truly Christian nation. Following the Civil War, however, there arose a subtle spread of secularism that is still impacting America today. Through the process of rebuilding the nation, we became a nation too busy for God. We, in the words of one author, were "almost a chosen people," but we missed the opportunity. The evangelistic fervor of the Second Awakening slowly but steadily died away, replaced by the gods of big business, humanism and the pursuit of wealth. This book is the story of evangelism in America and in the Wesleyan Church. It describes how a nation, and even Christian denominations, can become easily distracted from the biblical mandate of evangelism. It is the story of how we can choose the "good" over the "best." We have the tools and resources needed to evangelize the world. We have the historical records and methods of those who have gone before us. We have the mandate of Jesus to go and tell the world His story of grace. What we need is a renewed passion for what is truly important - to get beyond the walls of our churches and into a lost nation and a world to share what we already know. Evangelism is the key. "Almost" isn't good enough.
